Cassius, Au Reve

By Dale Miller

Cassius’ newest offering, Au Reve, is weird. Don’t get me wrong; I do enjoy weird electronica from time to time–but not this. Perhaps “awful” would be a better adjective to describe the French duo’s newest hunk of fromage.

Maybe Cassius couldn’t make up their minds about what genre of music to offer, but discontinuity of this magnitude is just uncalled for. The album goes from synth-heavy electro and cheesy vocal house, all the way to a hip-hop track featuring Ghostface Killah.

Au Reve includes almost every instrument you can imagine; they even sample a ring tone in the track “Telephone Love.” I’m all for experimental sounds in electronica, but not from a house duo. Cassius simply does not pull it off.

Too many genres, too many instruments, not enough quality. Save yourself from this audio garbage and buy something else.
