Clan’t burn a Dinosaur

By Jo Wynn

The Canada West season opened with a bang for the Dinos women’s volleyball team at Simon Fraser University Fri., Oct. 22. The SFU Clan were beaten swiftly 3-1 by the Dinos, crushing any hopes of beating the reigning national champs.

After winning Friday’s first set 25-16, the Dinos were a bit shaky in the next, losing 21-25. As the fearsome Calgarians adjusted to that fresh BC air, they stormed ahead to win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-8.

“On Friday it took us the first couple of sets to get into it,” power Julie Young commented, “but we worked well as a team Saturday and got it done.”

And they did. Although UBC came out in full force and stepped up their game, Calgary quickly took the lead and crushed the Clan 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18. Young came out on top with the most kills for the weekend at 25. Jo Niemczewska was not far behind with 23 kills.

Not only did the team come home with two wins in hand, but according to Young, it was a great weekend to try some new things.

“We tried a new rotation we like to call ‘remix’ for the future when there won’t be as many middles.”

Also contributing to the team’s success were Natalie Schwartz and Neda Boroumand, both racking up numerous digs over the weekend.

Reid Brodie also hit the court after a few weeks out with an ankle injury. She added that extra bit of leverage the team needed to start the season with success.

Dinos fans are in for some excitement as next weekend provides a real treat: you can see our spandex clad champs in action at the Husky Dino Cup Oct. 28-29. The Dinos will be facing off against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in the Jack.
