Dino honoured in Canada West

By Sean Nyilassy

University of Calgary student and Dinos football team member Richard Yalowsky has received national recognition for his exceptional play on the turf this year. This Canada West Lineman of the Year has also been nominated for the J.P. Metras Trophy for the outstanding lineman in Canada.

Yalowsky can lift school busses and soar over tall buildings in a single leap. Wait, no that was someone else. Despite the lack of building jumping, he is very agile for his size. Towering over even an ostrich at 65and outweighing a moped at 300 pounds, Yalowsky was an asset to the team against both passing and running plays.

Since joining the Dinos three seasons ago, Yalowsky has shown that he has what it takes to be one of our best. In his 2002 rookie year, Yalowsky earned himself three starts before suffering a season ending injury. Again in 2003 he started in all but two games. This season, Yalowsky came out as a starting right tackle in seven of the eight conference games.

At the tender age of just 20 years old, this lineman has not only been recognized athletically, but for his smarts too. For the past two years he has been dubbed a CIS Academic All-Canadian.

Another Dino chosen as the best at what he does is co-captain Evan Haney. He was labelled the Canada West All-Star centre. In his fourth year of a post-graduate degree, Haney has all the experience needed to dominate as an offensive centre lineman. Also comparable to a moped riding ostrich, Haney weighs in at 285 pounds and rises to 64 on a good day.

Despite this pair of skilled athletes, the Dinos’ season was cut short this year. They lost to the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the first round of playoffs. Congratulations go out to both All-Stars, hopefully they can lead the team to better things next year.
