Dinos witness Pandamonium

The Dinos women’s soccer team continued to steadily improve, pulling off another tie and a victory, advancing their record to 5-2-4 Oct. 15-16.

The battle of Alberta kicked off the weekend, supplying fans with all the name-calling, cat-fighting and general animosity one would expect in a game between these cross-province rivals. Both teams played a motivated game–many of the ladies have been competing against each other for years, not to mention the season’s earlier tie.

The air was stiff as the teams took to the pitch, but the Dinos seemed unaffected. Shirley Blundell pierced through the tension with the ease of a Cutco knife through a stick of soft butter. She beat Alberta’s keeper Carol Chan a mere four minutes into the game.

There was no cuddly PDA shown between the Pandas and Dinos of Alberta, with Erin Ramsay displaying the Dinos’ “killer instinct.” Her continuous rough play was noted by the ref, earning her a yellow card and demonstrating the bitter rivalry of these two teams.

The Pandas weren’t lazing around chewing bamboo either. They came out roaring in the second half, applying intense pressure.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Amy Ciezki headed an expert cross from Lisa Jennings into the top corner. This would be the final goal of the day, leaving each team with another year to brew hatred for one-another.

Sunday’s game was against the Huskie ladies of the University of Saskatchewan, and, on this day, the Dinos made them their bitch. Sue Wandler’s goal in the 33rd minute was well overdue. Kara Sturk played the role of Rick James, scoring a late goal in the second half, delivering the Huskies a slap in the face and the Dinos another victory.

Our Dinos hope to continue their success as they travel to challenge the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Sat., Oct. 22 and wrap up their home schedule Sun., Oct. 23 as they face the University of Victoria Vikes.
