Future University of Calgary students will face a myriad of choices in Fall 2002.
Currently, there are only five direct-entry faculties: Communication and Culture, Engineering, Fine Arts, Kinesiology and Nursing. But in Fall 2002, all faculties will be open to direct entry.
A main reason for the university's decision was student feedback from focus groups. Many students said if they weren't enrolled in a specific degree program, they at least wanted to be in their faculty of choice.
"This is a major, major shift for the U of C," said Dean of Communication and Culture Dr. Kathleen Scherf. "It's going to take us a couple of years to deal with that change in all different kinds of ways."
Quota programs, student advising and communicating the changes to high school and U of C students are issues that need addressing, added Scherf.
According to Registrar and Direct Entry Implementation Committee Chair Dr. Gary Krivy, the university must be ready by Fall 2001 because application forms are available 10 to 11 months in advance.
However, Students' Union Vice-president Academic-elect Nic Porco said the university won't be ready by Fall 2002.
"There's certainly problems and it's not been a priority," said Porco, adding direct entry is a good idea. "It's picking up steam but it's behind."
