Film Fest: Thumbsucker

Publication YearIssue Date

Thumbsucker was one of the most eagerly anticipated entries at this year's Film Fest, evidenced by the massive lines and throngs of people turned away at both of its screenings. Thanks to the buzz it will also go down as one the most disappointing. The film isn't bad, it's just entirely average. Boosted by clever marketing, audiences entered Thumbsucker expecting a quirky, philosophical comedy along the lines of I [Heart] Huckabees. What they got instead was a by-the-numbers coming of age story. It's hard to fault a movie because it wasn't what people expected but the story of Justin Cobb coming to grips with himself is just too middle-of-the-road to merit significant praise.
