In a battle between the only undefeated teams left in the Canada West division, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies skated away with two victories, leaving the Dinos with a .500 record. After annihilating the Pronghorns last weekend and having such success on both the power-play and penalty kill, the defensive collapse comes as quite a surprise. In two games, the Huskies scored as many goals as the Dinos had allowed in their entire season to date.
Fri., Oct. 29 the Dinos suffered a 6-4 loss, allowing three goals in the second period and digging themselves a hole from which they could not escape. Ryley Layden–with two goals on the night–Alex Lalonde and Colin McRae each tallied for the Dinos, but it was simply not enough to overcome the potent Husky offence. This game marked the first time this year that the Dinos had been out shot.
With a chance for revenge on Sat., Oct. 30, the Dinos again fell short by two goals. While Layden pitched in with a pair of assists for an impressive offensive weekend, the Huskies overwhelmed the Dinos. Dean Beuker, a third year Husky forward, finished with seven points for the series. Unable to shut down scoring talents such as Beuker, the Dinos could not manage a victory.
However, the guys have a week to recover and gear up for this weekend’s series in Winnipeg against the University of Manitoba Bisons. The Dinos need some points against the Bisons if they hope to stay on the heels of the arch rival University of Alberta Golden Bears, whom they face at the end of the month.
