Jurassic 5, Power in Numbers

By Kris Kotarski

Let’s face it, 2002 was not 1993. This was not a watershed year for the music industry, and generally, the top ten per cent of albums released were good, not great.

Jurassic 5’s Power in Numbers is one of these good albums, and is certainly a worthwhile disc to add to your collection. Its laid-back beats are vintage J5, and the Los Angeles crew offer a great alternative to beat-heavy, weak-minded mainstream hip-hop.

The lyrics are intelligent, the beats are solid, and this album has that intangible transcendent quality few hip-hop artists ever manage to reach. In a genre full of one hit wonders, J5 put together a good album–a rare feat in a disjointed and otherwise mediocre year.
