Everyone knew the Dinos men’s volleyball team had little hope to win against the #2 University of Manitoba Bisons–especially considering the Dinos’ less than stellar record thus far. However, it still would have been nice to chalk up at least one game in the win column.
Take solace in the fact that the Dinos are still #10 in the nation, and the Bisons are the defending CIS national champions–but hey, that’s loser talk.
Fri., Jan. 30 saw the Dinos drop the match 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20). They didn’t go out without a fight however, making the Manitobans sweat, especially in the third and final game, where the teams went back and forth on the majority of the points. In the end, the gopher hole that broke the Dinos’ leg was their 11 service errors.
Saturday’s match was more of the same, with the Bisons once again edging Calgary 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17). This match was a little more one sided than Friday, with a stellar performance from Manitoba’s All-Canadian setter Mike Munday, whose efforts simply could not be matched by the Calgary side.
It wasn’t a Dino-meat feast, but the Bisons put forth an effort above and beyond what the volleysaurs could maintain. There’s no shame in losing like that, but it still isn’t pleasant.
These matches were the last to be played in Calgary, as the Dinos travel to the University of Regina and Trinity Western to finish the season, and try to solidify a playoff spot.
