The Next Best Thing — Soundtrack

By Marcela Salamanca

Who knew Rupert Everett could sing? His vocals back up Madonna in the remake of Don McLean’s "American Pie" and if you don’t like it, trust me, it’ll grow on you.

William Orbit worked with Madonna on the remake, but please don’t judge him on that–his talent does surpass this poorly received song.

The Next Best Thing soundtrack offers some pleasant surprises. Christina Aguilera’s "Don’t Make Me Love You" is quite good, Groove Amanda offers a funky beat, and Moby keeps it going with "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" This funked up tune offers a mellow sound with a jazzy, gospel feel–weird mix, but worth the listen.

Madonna’s other song, "Time Stood Still" really does make time stand still with it’s "been there, done that" feel. The saving grace is Gabriel Yared’s "Forever and Always"–it’s romantic, soft and relaxing. On the whole, if you’re into funky beats and newer artists then this is a decent CD. However, be aware that it’s nothing spectacular–it’s status quo in the soundtrack department.
