Small child takes out linesman

If you don’t appreciate a good game of soccer, surely you can appreciate a small child taking out the linesman’s legs. Although the Dinos men’s soccer team extended their losing streak to three games Sat., Oct. 15, our hearts smiled at what befell that unfortunate official.

The loss was dealt by the loathsome northerners of the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The Dinos just couldn’t seem to get anything going in the first half. The Bears dominated play and the U of A’s Mark Korthius slide-kicked a cross from the corner into the back of the net.

“Competitively, we didn’t turn up very well in the first half. They were still having dinner with mom and dad, or still out on a date with their girl,” said Head Coach Andy Gibbs.

The turkey wore off in the second half and it became a 50:50 game.

Craig “Head” Robertson– made famous for scoring with his head–got over his mark and knocked one in off his noggin from a throw by Lauren “Bamboo” Ramos in the 70th minute. The Bears broke the tie 11 minutes later, with a goal from John Konye on the edge of the box.

During the injury minutes, U of A keeper Devon Fraser was lured 10 feet out of his box, but defender Quenton Zalazar saved the Bears’ asses and kept the ball from the empty net. The final score was 2-1 for the U of A.

Sunday, Oct. 16 may have been cloudier than Saturday, but prospects were brighter for the Dinos. They hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, and their generous blanket-giving fans.

Andrew “Horse” Waiand, who, like Pinocchio, was transformed back from a donkey, got the Dinos on the board in the 17th minute with a shot from the top of the box set-up beautifully by Carlos “Hot Karl” Cruz.

Cruz continued his reign of terror, scoring with a header off a throw from Ramos less than 15 minutes later.

The victory was sealed in the second half, with a priceless goal from Mazen “Maz-bot” Tabsh. He beat out his mark in the box to head in a sweet cross from Cruz.

Although the Huskies put good pressure on the Dinos throughout the game, the final score was 3-0, giving McDonnell his first shutout of the season.

“We didn’t play all that well. We fought for the result,” Waiand tersely analyzed.

The Dinos travel to the University of Lethbridge Fri., Oct. 21 to crush the Pronghorns then host the University of Victoria Vikes Sun., Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. on the West Varsity Soccer Pitch. UVic is likely to be U of C’s greatest competition for the final berth in the Canada West playoffs. Check out the game–if only to watch the sideline circus. But bring blankets. It’s cold.
