Snowy soccer

By John Fisher

Adversity is setting in as the smell of the playoffs becomes increasingly pungent in the Canada West women’s soccer league. In an epic battle against nature, our Dinos squad found themselves with yet another day off on Sat., Oct. 23 as the snow encompassed our city and their second game in a row was cancelled.

Well, at least we can feel a little better than Edmonton. Their conditions were so bad that not only was the original game against the Dinos Sun., Oct. 17 cancelled, but the make-up game Wed., Oct. 20 was also cancelled due to the horrible weather.

Although giving the girls some time to work on their Halloween costumes, having the last two games cancelled got them a little out of sync for their game Sun., Oct. 24. The University of Victoria Vikes were the only team this year that our Dinos have played against and not beaten. That did not change as the Vikes solidly dealt a 2-1 blow, ending the Dinos recent undefeated streak. With the only goal for Calgary coming from a Vikes error, the Dinos weren’t looking like the first place team that we saw last week.

The make-up game against the Trinity Western University Spartans was re-scheduled from Saturday to Mon., Oct. 25. The outlook was certainly grim for the Dinos again as some defensive miscues resulted in a 2-0 win for the Spartans.

“Our heart just wasn’t in it this weekend,” said Dinos mid-fielder Jessica Horning.

The two big L’s are a considerable setback in the Dinos’ conquest for the playoffs. This weekend’s losses set them back to third place in the Canada West league. The real crunch-time for our Dinos squad is this weekend. They have a doubleheader against the women on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns squad. The U of L has really been an on-and-off team this year, so our girls know they have their work cut out for them.

“We need to win these games if we want to make sure we make it to the playoffs,” said Horning.

Come and give the Dinos team some support as they take on the Pronghorns in their final home game of the season Sun., Oct. 31 at noon.
