The University of Calgary Faculty Association recognized the connection between the university and the community during its annual awards ceremony, Wed., Dec. 2.
Professor Jennifer Koshan, of the Faculty of Law, won the 2004 Community Service Award for her work with a variety of community organizations. As a member of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund Board of Directors, as well as Co-Chair of the National Legal Committee, Koshan’s work outside of the classroom is centered on women’s legal equality.
“I feel very privileged as an academic to have a position which allows me to integrate what I do with the community with what I do as an academic,” Koshan said. “It’s really a wonderful honor. I don’t do this kind of work for the fame and glory.”
The Faculty Association also honored Paul Drager, chair of the International Trade Law Department at the Macleod Dixon law firm, with its annual Recognition Award. The Recognition Award is given to a community member who has shown outstanding support for the academic staff at the U of C. Drager, who has been involved with the U of C as a member of various boards and committees for the past 15 years, is well known for his strong support of internationalization.
“To get an award for something you enjoy doing is great,” said Drager following the ceremony.
Drager was a founding member of the Dean’s Community Council in the Faculty of Law, and has chaired the International Business Advisory Board. He currently sits on the Board of the U of C Gorbachev Foundation Joint Trust Fund. The foundation to date has administered $6-7 million to training projects and studies that contribute to economic and political reform in Russia.
“I feel very strongly that a world class city like Calgary needs to have a world class university,” explained Drager.
The awards were jointly presented by U of C President Harvey Weingarten and TUCFA President Anton Colijn.
