Waters of Eden

By Ken Clarke

Tony Levin has a reputation for being one of the hottest bass players in the business, and deservedly so. Having been a long-time member of King Crimson and Peter Gabriel’s band, he’s also recorded with the California Guitar Trio and John Lennon, to name a few of the diverse artists who have sought out his services.

Waters of Eden, Levin’s fifth solo project, proves he’s a solid composer in his own right. This CD highlights the electric bass as a melodic lead instrument, cascading majestically through synth, guitar and drum textures. Levin also pilots an upright bass and cello. The compositions have a world music feel, bordering at times on jazz. These often gentle numbers are a far cry from the thundering sounds that are King Crimson. Highly recommended for aspiring or experienced bassists.
