Letter: Comics should be funny, not discriminatoryPDF files may take a moment to load

Editor, the Gauntlet,

I was extremely offended by a recent comic [Re: "AutoSomna cartoon," Sept. 9, Marc Lynch and Lars Hedlund] displayed by the Gauntlet. This comic included a supposed "cartoon" that utilized discriminatory language against people with large bodies (weight discrimination) and women (sexual discrimination). Although I appreciate political cartoons, when their very message reinforces stereotypes that seek to undermine people's worth, they have no place on campus.

At first glance, Danielle Smith's recent appearance at the University of Calgary to discuss the prospects of post-secondary education seemed promising. But after a closer look at the language of her speech and the policy booklet handed out, the reality begins to set in.

Though Smith and the Wildrose Party promised the world to students, the discussion lacked any solid qualifiers or goals. At the end of the day, it's just another politician pandering to students-- a scene that happens all too often.

Investigating fascism: an analysis of the termPDF files may take a moment to load

What fascism is has been subject to much debate. Can it be described using a set of characteristics? Or has it been reduced to simply describing all forms of authoritarian governments and simply people we don't like very much? As one who studies political science, I sure hope the field comes up with some concrete definitions and classify fascism.

Spun: Final FlashPDF files may take a moment to load

Breakglass Studio, run by producer/musician Jace Lasek, has been home to some of Canada's biggest names like Patrick Watson, Stars, Wintersleep and Wolf Parade, just to name a few. It's no wonder that the debut album from Montreal's Final Flash, Homeless, is nothing short of impressive having been produced and recorded at the same renowned locale.

Spun: Type Monkey TypePDF files may take a moment to load

If Jungle Noise by local talent Type Monkey Type was a food, it would be an unevenly blended, half-filled Blizzard dessert -- it has all the sweetness and surprise that you would hope for from a modern alt-rock/indie trio but ultimately feels slightly lacking.
