Say “no” to Dinos

Editor, the Gauntlet,

In response to all of the commotion of Dino Athletics possibly being cut I have a few things to say. First off, all I keep hearing that the amount of the fee increase in only minimal and that if I don’t go drinking and give my $11 to athletics instead, then they won’t be cut. Well my response to that is it is my money and I should be able to spend it on whatever I want to.

Now that athletics are on the chopping block, we have to really consider what the priorities of a post-secondary institution are: education or athletics? There have been many budget cuts in all of the faculties across campus and it upsets me that it isn’t until athletics are on the edge of a cliff that we get people complaining. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Kinesiology Faculty is great and has its place; but in the realms of education and the health and wellness of the faculty and students. I don’t mind providing money for the great exercise facilities we have, because it promotes healthy living. If the athletes want to keep their varsity teams perhaps they should go to Harvey and the VPs and ask why they gave themselves a combined raise of over $200,000.

On a final note if athletics do take a cut, I believe the money that was budgeted for those teams should be spent wisely, perhaps on education–What a novel idea for a university!!
