Alan Rock's backing of new graphic warnings on cigarette packages raises the issue of whether images speak louder than words. The idea is that if slapping a warning label across 60 per cent of a cigarette pack doesn't shock people into realizing that smoking can harm or kill you, then slapping a picture of these effects on it just might.

Stretched out along the foreign floors of a basement hostel in London, I felt the weight of a land drowned in past and saw above me a figure of the future. She stood tall with vigor as her shadow blocked the sun from my eyes. With cheerful interrogation she let loose a southern us accent and gestured toward the Canadian Flag on my pack, "So you really Canadian or ya just using it as a cover like us?" I grinned at the irony and stood up to find that the girl was not quite as tall as I had thought.

There it is, the lure of higher education. We are all here stirring among narrow hallways and lining ourselves up like ducks for indoctrination. I notice a staggered looking fellow who appears to wander without direction while hundreds storm like ants to various classrooms, classes and careers. I am caught staring a moment too long at the girl across a Mac Hall table who reminds me of a friend I've since lost touch with. I wonder what history has brought her to inch long pink hair and scattered rings across her face.
