Volleysaurs bring winning back into stylePDF files may take a moment to load

Like Andre Agassi playing tennis against a Care Bear, the Dinos women's volleyball team have proven they still have what it takes at a tournament in Regina Sept. 23-25. Not only were they the eventual winners, but the girls also went undefeated, losing only four sets in five matches.

This would be no feat for last year's team, but considering they played with nine players and a number of changes have been made to the lineup, there is a lot to grin about.

In the last few years, of the University of Calgary's Dinos teams, one stands out as the most decorated and recognised. They have won three of the last five Canada West Championships and a national title in 2004, and proven they still have what it takes with a highly coveted undefeated regular season last year.

Talent

This team had a lot of height, a lot of strength and a lot of wins under their belt. At the base of this, what made the women's volleyball team so damn good was their plethora of talent on the court. A few key returning players are Canadian Interuniversity Sport Player of the Year Joanna Niemczewska, Canada West Rookie of the Year Lauren Perry, and others. The team is as deep as they come, and any player can hit the court and dominate at any time.

Though the Dinos men's volleyball team did not fare well in the standings this season, by far the worst loss they face is the departure of fifth-year player Sean Kendal. After a three years with the Dinos, Kendal's leadership and national-caliber talent will be hard to replace.

With a national title under their spandex, memories of trailer trash themes and "Journey" filled Den nights, three Dinos women's volleysaur middles flee the coop to enter the unknown: life after the Dinos. Leaving the team lacking middles and size on the court, these three players will be remembered long after they're gone.

In March, 2004 the Dinos women's volleyball team fought their way to the top, winning the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women's Volleyball Championship in Saskatoon, SK with sweat and tears.

In the 2004-2005 pre-season, there was some concern when the Dinos lost all three games they played against the always competitive University of Alberta Pandas. Losing two key players, Amanda Moppet and Jill Friend, to graduation last year, the new recruits needed to step up to the plate, and they were looking pretty good.

Sometimes you have a good team. Sometimes you have a great team. But if you're as lucky as the Dinos women's volleyball team, you have a team molded by the Almighty himself. It came as no surprise, when Canada West and Canadian Interuniversity Sport award recipients were announced Wed., Feb. 23 and Wed., Mar. 2 respectively, that the Dinos cleaned up like Mary Poppins.
