Dinos middle blocker Sean Kendal scored a game-high 19 points on Aug. 30 to net Canada a 3-1 win over Germany, grabbing the seventh spot in men's volleyball at the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea. It is Canada's best finish since 1983 when the men took silver in Edmonton.

It was a hard-fought battle, as Canada scrapped out a lead based on guts, sweat and sheer determination. According to Dinos and Canadian Head Coach Greg Ryan, the team won in true Canuck style.

Canada's women's volleyball team finished the 2003 Summer Universiade in South Korea with one more win under their belts, an 11th place standing and a good helping of Canadian pride. The women closed out their tournament on Sat., Aug. 30 with a close 3-2 win over the Italian squad.

The U of C's Amanda Moppett was pleased with the team's performance in the tournament and said the women were proud of their efforts.

"It was an honour," said Moppett. "It was great to represent our country."

Team Canada failed to regain their momentum on Aug. 29th, falling 3 sets to 2 against Turkey in men's volleyball. After a loss to the experienced players from Japan the previous night, the Canadians were not able to take the win in the consolation round.

Team Canada was on a roll, but was unable to stop a Japanese attack.

After building some strong momentum earlier in the tournament, Japan removed any chance the Canadian men's volleyball team had of taking home a medal Thursday night at the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea. The Japanese team won the game 3 sets to 1 on Thu., Aug. 28. Canada trailed in all but one set, kamikazed by their own reluctance, and unable to get past the Japanese defenses.

  Canadian Soccer women place tenth at UniversidePDF files may take a moment to load

The Canadian soccer women fell 2-1 to the German squad on Thu., Aug. 28, giving them a tenth place standing in the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea. The team battled hard but were unable to overcome the German defense.

The game was the team's fourth at Universiade. They lost their opener to South Korea on Aug. 20 by 3-1 and their second (and final) round robin game to Ireland on Aug. 22 by 4-1.

They say a Danish is a doughnut without a hole. The Danes were unable to find the hole in Team Canada's defense on Wednesday, though. The Canadian men's volleyball team, who continue to dominate the court at the 2003 Summer Universide in South Korea picked up a 3-0 sweep of Denmark on Wed., Aug. 27 in Daegu, clinching the top spot in their pool. The win will send the Canucks to the quarterfinals against Japan on Thursday.

With round-robin play coming to an end today at the Universiade games, Canada's women's volleyball team has a lot to look back on in their two days off before the medal and consolation rounds start on Thursday.

After losses to Spain and South Korea in the first two games, and a strong win over Hong Kong today, Canada is left out of the medal rounds, but hopes to have a strong finish on the consolation side.

With two Dinos in the starting lineup, Canada's women's volleyball team hoped to beat out the host team at Daegu, South Korea on Sun., Aug. 24 for a spot in the medal rounds at the 2003 Universide, but the women just couldn't stay out in front.

Trailing South Korea for all of the first set, Canada had some trouble at the net against their low-hitting opponents.

  Canadian men best UkrainePDF files may take a moment to load

The Canadian men's volleyball team caused a meltdown in the Ukrainian squad on Sat., Aug. 23. Following a rough loss to the Americans on Friday, Dinos volleyball coach Greg Ryan took the Canadians to a 3-1 victory over the Ukraine and a tie for first place in their pool at the Summer Universiade in Daegu.

The team, including University of Calgary player Sean Kendal took to the floor at the Yeungnam College Gymnasium Saturday evening in front of a small but boisterous crowd of Canadian fans and young Korean boosters.
