Structuralist film theory emphasizes how films convey meaning through the use of codes and conventions not dissimilar to the way languages are used to construct meaning in communication. Patrick Mclaughlin uses this theory explicitly in his experimental film composition Viewmanship. The exhibit is a selection of films and videos produced in Calgary between 1994 and 2002.

Juxtaposed surveillance camera footage; a 28-minute continuous shot of the Calgary tower's revolving restaurant; a series of shots centering on the various incarnations of the first pre-fabricated house design--if it's not independent cinema then Vin Diesel's movies have become strangely unconventional. Viewmanship is a series of short, experimental films by filmmaker Patrick McLaughlin, the acclaimed cinematographer of the +15 drama waydowntown.

Al Gore did not create the Internet, nor a victory for himself because of Florida in 2000, but that didn't stop Dr. Richard Davis, Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University in Utah from lecturing about U.S. on-line election campaigns to a handful of political science aficionados on Tue., Nov. 26.

Montreal Alouettes running back Lawrence Phillips must have already been drinking out of the Grey Cup when he called it the "biggest cup in professional sports" following Sunday's Canadian Football League championship game. While the Grey Cup may in fact hold more celebratory beverage than any other North American sports prize, in terms of prestige, it can scarcely hold a candle to such revered icons as the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the World Series trophy or the Stanley Cup.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study on Nov. 13 stating there is no medical reason why women in their 50s should not have babies with donor eggs. Once again, medical science has moved faster than cultural consensus.

Does video-game violence lead to the real thing?PDF files may take a moment to load

It's only a game, right? Last month's release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City revived the controversy surrounding realistically violent video games.

Some people, notably parents, are alarmed at the possible influence these games have on young people. Others see this as overreaction. In either case, with the success of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 3, which has sold over seven million copies since its release, the success of the sequel seems inevitable.
