Sex! It's a steamy topic that gets talked about as frequently as the Facebook craze, but do students understand it as well as they should?

To address sex in a fun and creative way, the University of Calgary Students' Union will run a series of activities in and around the MacEwan Student Centre during Sexual Awareness Week. The events will take place March 23-27.

Students won't have to rush for seats in MacEwan Student Centre or pay for BSD wristbands next year, now that the Students' Union allocated over $1.6 million of Quality Money for 16 new projects.

The Quality Money proposals were approved by the Students' Legislative Council on March 3 and the funds will be divided by September 2009.

Projects funded include the MacHall student space expansion, the CJSW relocation project and Bermuda Shorts Day.

There are two reasons for students to be happy that the Students' Union elections are over: next year's executives start training and Tim Hortons' roll up the rim is just around the corner.

SU election results were announced at the Den on Feb. 19.

"I'm actually really excited to work with the new council," said newly elected SU president Charlotte Kingston. "I hope we'll have the opportunity to get a lot done."

Every year university students spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks and it seems like prices are always going up.

A new campaign, set to begin in March, is trying to tackle the cost of textbooks. The Be Book Smart campaign, put on by the University of Calgary Students' Union, is modeled after a similar campaign at the University of Alberta. It will teach students and professors ways to make academic materials more affordable.

The University of Calgary Students' Union has taken a page out of Mount Royal College's playbook in an effort to ease computing congestion on campus.

Funded by a quality money initiative, the SU has installed a pair of computer kiosks in MacEwan Student Centre as part of a pilot project proposed by operations and finance commissioner Bryan Campbell, inspired by a system already in place at MRC.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster has another hurdle to tackle in spreading his noodly appendage across the land. University of Calgary third-year chemical engineering student Jeremy Zhao approached the Students' Union clubs committee with a proposal to start a Pastafarian Student Society last week and was denied.

"To them it would be a parody religion, but for us, our god wants it to be a parody," said Zhao. "They questioned our sincerity and we have a problem with that."

The Students' Union annual byelection went by another year without any complications. The results weren't all as expected, but a 15 per cent turn out, roughly four percent age points higher than the general election in February, implies that the student democratic process is picking up.

"I was appointed before so I'll pretty much continue what I was doing except I'll have a little more freedom and less restrictions," said newly elected events commissioner Andrea Llewellyn.

Student Senator Nick Vuckovic has been removed from the University of Calgary Senate by the Students' Union for failing to give a required report to council. Vuckovic claims the removal defames his character. He is also angry a serious three-month illness was not considered during the motion.
