Ursula Rucker sings poetryPDF files may take a moment to load

Many have heard that poetry is painting with the gift of speech. The special type of communication that is exclusive to poetry is that words can move in and out of the poet and reader's inner emotions. Ursula Rucker is one of the biggest names in the music industry who records her poetry over multiple genres of music. Her voice is sultry, always carrying a hint of poignant sentiment, though her lyrics are hardly ever about self-centred depression.

Lorrie KnowsPDF files may take a moment to load

Halfway through my conversation with Lorrie Matheson, a group of carolers come into the Kensington cafe where we are eating lunch. Their long flannel coats seem incongruous with Calgary's surprisingly balmy late-November weather. Following their brief performance, the former lead singer of noted local bands National Dust and Fire Engine Red looks across the table at me and states: "That's hard to do, to get those harmonies and everything. I hate that song, but that's hard to do."

Security tramples basic rightsPDF files may take a moment to load

Standing in line, innocently waiting to check in at the airport, a man is suddenly pulled aside by security guards, whisked away to a secluded room. He is then told to stand absolutely still while they unceremoniously open his suitcase, meticulously examining every personal article as he is forced to stand in a corner without sound or movement, or risk being arrested. What place could this possibly be? Israel, China, or perhaps Iraq?

Health care slutsPDF files may take a moment to load

Though the Canadian health care system has been in perpetual need of reform since its establishment in 1957, there is yet to be a report that Ottawa can live with. Over the last 50 years, she has flirted with many a health care expert. On several occasions, she maintained a promising relationship, but in the end, she is incapable of committing long term. There is only one conclusion to be made: the federal government is a slut.

Image is everythingPDF files may take a moment to load

Metaphor is a powerful thing. In literature, it can invoke powerful imagery or emotion. In common discourse, it can express the inexpressible, breathing life into the abstract. And in advertising, it can say so much with so little, reinventing the familiar. It is a powerful little thing like metaphor that may--and that certainly should--debase the Students' Union's entire tuition campaign, beginning and ending with their two newest posters.

Foreword: letter from the editorPDF files may take a moment to load

Every year it's the same. We review the executive members of the Students' Union (typically twice a year), and more often than not, we anger them. We receive letters, are beleaguered by irate elected officials and already confrontational relations between the Gauntlet and the SU worsen.

This year promises to be no different.

VP Operations Finance Robbie WhitePDF files may take a moment to load

It's a safe bet to say SU VP Op-Fi Robbie White is the best VP the SU has right now. He's organized, intelligent and knows what he's doing. This is good considering the SU has an $8 million budget and a huge loan to repay, not to mention all that interest.
