Being a huge Lord of the Rings and J. R.R. Tolkien fan, I will be the first to agree, with both hands clapping, that the Lord of the Rings movies released thus far are visual masterpieces. With amazing dialogue, casting, production, effects, and direction, both films should be held highly in the world of Oscar nominations, critical literary circles, and the arts communities at large. But amidst all the effects, we may fail to see that these movies, based on Tolkien's books, have larger parallels to real world events and current issues.

They're shot on Super 8 film with budgets as insignificant as the contents of a starving entertainment writer's wallet. They bypass garish fire-breathing pharaohs and play in theatres that don't have ticket dispensing sarcophagi. In their world, short is sweet and colour just subtracts from the experience. They're independent films, and beginning March 13, they'll be showcased at to the 11th annual Calgary Society of Independent Filmmaker's $100 Film Festival.

There is some music that you're just not going to get. Not everyone likes the same music, and that's fair. Sometimes, it's a matter of taste; sometimes, a matter of intellect. "High brow" music isn't accessible to the masses, and that's fair, too. But once in a while, unfortunately, it's a matter of quality. Sometimes, there's just nothing to get.

Enter Tetrix, a self-proclaimed, Calgary-based "free-form jazz" group that has, in no comprehendible way, anything to do with jazz.
