Real heroes are all around usPDF files may take a moment to load

Around the same time I started to lament that the Flames might not make the post-season for the fourth straight year, I was in a class listening to a presentation on why Canada needs hockey. The argument centred around how we Canadians need to find a solution to avoid the permanent migration of our sacred ice knights. Surprisingly enough, I could see through all the arguments (even though I'm a huge fan) and I started to think about the bigger picture.

"Look at me: I worked my way up from nothing to a state of extreme poverty."- Groucho Marx

The most depressing thing happened the other day: I handed in the first of what will be many job applications for summer. Oh, I'm not depressed about the likelihood of finding a job, I'm depressed because no matter what I do, I won't earn enough to support myself in the next year of school. This means I, like most other students, will apply for a dreaded student loan.

Not many people recognize the name Dwayne Johnson. Some remember his college football career for the Miami Hurricanes. Fewer remember his unsuccessful Stampeders training camp. All in all, Dwayne is a pretty obscure personality--about as famous as your average university football stud can get.

Shayla Swanson struck the motherlode at last month's national cross-country skiing championships.

The 18-year-old University of Calgary student came away from the event with four gold medals, winning the 10km classic and combined pursuit, the sprint, and the 7.5km classic races in the junior girls category.

The gold medals put Swanson well on the way to her goal, a berth on the Canadian Olympic team.

"It would be really great to make the Olympics someday, or the World Cup circuit."

I'm not sure exactly what it is about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter that invokes the passions and the deepest senses. Maybe it is his remarkable life, fraught with every kind of evil and tempered by the sweetness of his triumphant comeback. Or maybe it is his aura; a potent presence that penetrates the soul.

Society's idea of what comprises a media baron has been largely shaped by the character of Charles Foster Kane, Orson Welles' megalomaniacal newspaper owner in the 1941 movie, Citizen Kane. The oft-despised character of Kane was loosely based upon William Randolph Hearst, a real-life media baron renowned for his immense media holdings, and the tyrannical and eccentric manner by which he ran them.

Black urban America has embraced the kung-fu film genre since the days of Saturday morning kung fu shows and "blaxploitation" flicks of the '70s. These movies took the genre and gave it an urban twist (i.e. Dolemite and Black Belt Jones), and now Hollywood is flirting with the whole East-meets-West premise.

Enter Romeo Must Die, the latest attempt by Hollywood to fuse hip-hop/urban culture with the intense action scenes of kung-fu flicks, playing off the similarities and differences between Asians and Blacks.

Faith can be a fickle thing. You believe, you struggle, you think you're free, but faith still gets you in the end. It's that nagging voice in the back of your head you can't get rid of.

Ed Harris would know. As reluctant Father Frank Shore in The Third Miracle, Harris avoids faith only to be cornered by it.

Those "fortunate" enough to have seen the advertisements for the film Here on Earth will notice the following caption attached to the title: "Featuring 'Where You Are' by Jessica Simpson." The caption almost makes Here on Earth sound like a good movie.
