Recall, for a moment, the mid-nineties. Nine Inch Nails' groundbreaking album The Downward Spiral was fresh, brutal, and angry, helping to introduce the masses to the beauty of crushing, dark industrial noise. All of a sudden, a legion of bands squeezed their most photogenic member into tight vinyl pants, bought their very own copy of Pro-Tools, and followed Trent Reznor all the way to the bank.

No one would have believed a cartoon trip-hop band composed of the egomaniacal co-genius behind Blur, an obscure producer, the cousin of Ice Cube and a jumble of guest collaborators would achieve the resounding success the Gorillaz did with their 2001 self-titled debut. Yet, somehow they managed to not only score a couple of crossover hits they also sold millions of albums.   Spun: Wednesday 13PDF files may take a moment to load

There aren't enough albums intending to be nothing more than stupid fun. When the Murder Doll's Wednesday 13 set off to produce a solo effort, he did so without taking himself too seriously, the resultant album, Translyania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, and the Dead, is a satirical homage to B list horror movies. While keeping with this tongue-in-cheek theme, Wednesday 13 manages to produce an incredibly infectious, and at times hilarious composite of punk and horror rock.

Arden's latest self titled release is an insanely repetitive affair, while its stifling production renders it as bland as water. The first half of the album quietly slips by before you notice you have been listening to six different tracks.

Finally, a news headline Canadians can be proud of. In a country where recent events in headline news have either been an embarrassing combination of political bickering and infidelity or the overpriced visit of an outdated monarch, there is finally a ray of light for Canadian news.

Music Interview: Boca 45 opens ears his own wayPDF files may take a moment to load

Tune into any radio station in the city and chances are you'll come across a song devoid of any originality. In today's sales obsessed music industry it's rare to find something able to set itself apart from the throngs of uninspired commercial offerings. Madonna, 50 Cent and U2 are all talented in their own right, but lack the necessary individuality to keep the airways from being dull. What these artists require is variety and the ability to conquer different genres of music.
