The AMP Your Game National Gaming Tour rolled through the university campus on April 7, 8 and 9. It was a pretty good time -- lots of video game consoles to play, a Rock Band competition to watch and endless AMP energy drinks to consume. I was a little disappointed, though, in the staff that worked the event.

The need for innovation in the gaming industry was a major theme in many gaming publications' years-in-reviews. Innovation, it was concluded, was needed to bring the industry out of a stagnant cycle and move it forward into new, uncharted territory. Not only was it recommended that game developers go out on a limb, it was also suggested that players become more forgiving toward attempts at fresh, creative and quirky games. Whether innovation is really coming is yet to be seen.

Hindsight is 20/20. In the case of the tragic story of Brandon Crisp, hard lessons have been learned and those we must now take it upon ourselves to learn are more important than ever. It is easy under such terribly tragic circumstances as the death of Crisp to have an intense desire to answer unanswerable questions. In the case of a recent episode of CBC's the fifth estate, the first place in which to find answers, and thus to shoulder the blame, are video games themselves.
