Looking for something to do on campus while making some cash, friends and contacts in the process? Look no further than the Students’ Union fall by-election, which will run on Oct. 10-12.
The nomination process for this year’s by-election opened Tues., Sept. 11, and is quite simple. By gathering the signatures of five students who are eligible to vote on the day of the by-election and providing a telephone number, address and letter of acceptance of the nomination, any eligible voter can be a candidate.
"There are a lot of things going on at the Students’ Union," said SU Vice-President Academic Nic Porco, extrapolating on the opportunities if elected. "Committees, projects and a lot of barbeques."
The contested positions in the by-election include one opening for an events commissioner, one for external and three for academic. There are also seven faculty representative positions available.
"A basic job description," said Porco, "is mandatory attendance at Students’ Legislative Council on Tuesday night and Students’ Academic Assembly on Monday evenings for Academic Commissioners."
While it may seem like a lot of work, much of which is behind the scenes, there are opportunities and perks involved–some go so far as to say influence.
"There’s always an opportunity to make a difference," said Porco. "Some people may disagree with me on that, but I feel that a lot of changes can be made."
While the honoraria and involvement on campus may be rewarding, Porco also lauds more tangible rewards.
"It always looks good on a resumé. Not necessarily just the title of commissioner, but the tasks that you do," Porco explained, before joking, "But I don’t know anyone who’s here to do that."
