Don’t throw it all away

It’s time to clean up the University of Calgary and the Environmental Management Committee knows just how to do it.

The committee and the Clean Calgary Association are hosting the U of C’s first Reuse Roundup on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The event will provide much needed supplies to charity groups in the university community and promote recycling on campus.

"The event raises awareness that there are other things you can do with garbage," said Patricia Grieef, the committee’s Environmental Coordinator.

Items valid for collection include garden tools and supplies for the Students’ Union Community Garden, egg cartons for the U of C and Interfaith Food Banks and sheets and towels for Women in Need, a charitable organization.

Items can be dropped off in the North Courtyard of MacEwan Hall from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Since this is the first Reuse Roundup at the U of C, the Environmental Management Committee doesn’t know what to expect, but they are hoping to make the event an annual affair.

"We still have a ways to go [to make the U of C campus environmentally responsible] but we have started a database so we can track our progress and monitor our performance and make adjustments from there," said Grieef.
