Last weekend Lindsay Park housed swimmers from across the province during the Alberta Senior Championships.
Yet again, Kristy Cameron dazzled the crowd with a stellar performance in both the 100m Breaststroke and the 200m Individual Medley. Other impressive performances came from Olympian and University of Calgary swimmer Morgan Knabe in the 100m Breaststroke and Josh Bauman in the 100m Butterfly.
With the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships just around the corner the Dinos are sitting pretty-going into the meet 36 swimmers strong. After this weekend’s meet, Mary-Louise Martin will join her teammates for nationals in Vancouver. She solidified her spot on the team in her last race, on the last day of the ASC in the 50m Breaststroke. The team now has 18 women and 19 men qualified, but with the CIS maximum being 36 the coaching staff has no choice but to trim the team by one. The decision will be made Tuesday.
Head Coach Mike Blondal admits having many swimmers competing in the national championship does not necessarily give the team the "depth" to dominate. He anticipates some heavy competition from the University of British Columbia.
"UBC has more national team members and their depth is much stronger at higher levels," he said.
Nonetheless, Blondal is proud of his team and constantly praises them as one of the strongest units he has coached at the University of Calgary.
Following the CIS meet in Vancouver, the Commonwealth Trials will take our Dinos to Winnipeg, on March 19–24.
