VP Events

By Mary Chan

Geoff Schoenberg is a self-proclaimed Renaissance man, and when you couple this notion with a lot of energy, Schoenberg would have made a decent VP Events on most counts. Unfortunately, Schoenberg’s qualifications suffer when you consider he doesn’t understand the limitations and scope of the events portfolio.

Experience

Schoenberg has no governance experience, and in this case it really counts against him. Besides having loads of experience planning and organizing events, he also has his ear to the ground. He knew of issues surrounding the Den and spoke knowledgeably about current VP Chris Kerr’s initiatives. Where he is lacking is on the knowledge of the executive responsibilities of the portfolio-things like how he would deal with the SLC’s newly-mandated desire to dissolve the Dinos Athletics Advisory Council.

Platform

Because of his weak knowledge of the portfolio, Schoenberg would be hard pressed to implement his novel ideas. While we have no doubt he could organize, plan and publicize the dynamic ideas in his platform, he has little idea how they fit in the SU framework or how to use the existing resources the SU already has.

Intangibles

Once again, Schoenberg’s drive and energy would have made him more appropriate for a term as events commissioner. If not elected, we hope to see him involved in next year’s SU events portfolio in some volunteer capacity. Schoenberg and the events will be better off for it, where as the SU may not have been better off if Schoenberg himself was VP Events.

Without a doubt.
