Rice, discotekas and all things BSD

By Chris Kerr

A huge outdoor Diskoteka? What is a Diskoteka? Simply put, it’s what we’re calling this year’s Bermuda Shorts Day Beer Gardens. You will be wowed, dazzled, and hopefully a little sun-cooked. That is if the weather gods deem us worthy. In the next couple hundred words, you will know everything that you need to about BSD this year.

First of all, if you do not know what BSD is you are in for one hell of a treat. This year promises to have one of the most diverse and exciting lineups ever. To kick the festivities off, we have invited Maurice Yacowar, co-creator of BSD and founder of the Gauntlet, to educate all of you kiddies and froshlets on where and how BSD began. We also have a fantastic lineup of musical entertainment, including the stylings of Chixdiggit, Jacuzzi Romance, Washboard Hank, DJ Rice, and a troupe of bellydancers. Curious as to exactly what these musical artists will tease your ears with? I guess you’ll have to show up to find out… but don’t worry–it’ll be fun. I promise.

As usual, the Diskoteka will open at noon, and last call will be at 5 p.m. It will be outside on the MacEwan Student Centre South Lawn, weather permitting, and should it be stupid cold that day, the event will move into the newly expanded MacEwan Hall.

There are also some changes this year that you may not be aware of. This year’s event is limited only to U of C Students, Alumni, and their one invited guest.

To gain access to the Diskoteka, you will be required to wear an official BSD wristband. These will be available in the MSC North Courtyard April 11, 12, and 15 from
9 a.m.–5 p.m. There will be additional tables set up on April 11 from 9 a.m.– 5 p.m. in the Social Sciences foyer, April 12 from 5–11 p.m. outside the Den, and April 15 from 4–8 p.m. in the Dining Centre. And yes, there will be a table set up on BSD, but the lineup will likely be huge, so it’s in your best interest to get your wristband as early as possible. All you need is age ID and your U of C ID, and you’re set.

Should you want to bring an off-campus guest, they must be with you when you get your wristband. You must wear your wristband until BSD. We can’t just hand you one, because that is essentially proof that you’re 18, and we can’t have those wristbands getting into the hands of minors now can we? Alumni bracelets can be obtained through the Alumni Office.

Once you’re in the Diskoteka, it’s absolutely essential that you carry your age ID and U of C ID with you at all times, as you must be able to produce both on demand.

And finally, please be safe. Don’t drive if you don’t have to, there will be plenty of alternate transportation available. Make sure you don’t have too much to drink, space it out, eat something during the day, and drink lots of water. If you need help, or see someone who needs help, please tell someone. Questions?
