Streaky Dinos sneak into post season

When I typed “the Dinos lost a game to Lethbridge,” the grammar check on my computer said “no.” No one loses to the Lethbridge Pronghorns, even Microsoft knows that. They are the Faroe Islands of Canada West men’s soccer–they’re the sure win, the weekend off, the guaranteed points.

But tell that to the Dinos who managed to actually lose a game 2-1 before they beat the Pronghorns 6-0 a day later.

“We move between good and terrible,” said midfielder Matt Houston who scored twice for the Dinos Saturday. “We always do just enough to get into the playoffs.”

Calgary finished the season with a 4-6-2 record, just two points ahead of Trinity Western for the final playoff spot.

“The beginning of the season was good, but we lost confidence when we lost to Saskatchwan,” said Houston. “It’s good to beat a team 6-0. Maybe it’ll help us with our confidence.”

The Dinos hold the fourth seed in the Canada West Conference which guarantees them a date with the top-ranked University of Victoria.

“We always play them well,” said Houston. “So you never know.”

G-G-G-Goal Notes:

During Saturday’s 6-0 triumph, Head Coach Andy Gibbs kept his legendary yelling to a minimum. He berated his players only three times per minute.

Matt Houston, the most popular man on campus, spends a lot of quality time with his fans, including soccer player Steph Hoogveld.

“I seriously thought we’d become something, but he’s too popular,” said Hoogveld. “When I see him, I get shivers up and down–all over.”

Forward Marty Marshall scored a goal against Victoria Oct. 20, 2002.
