New federal funds for innovation

The University of Calgary will receive $559,000 from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation’s New Opportunities Fund to strengthen research training. The announcement by federal Industry Minister Allan Rock and Health Minister Anne McLellan is a part of $17 million earmarked in the fund for infrastructure support for newly-recruited academic staff.

“Attracting and retaining high-caliber researchers to our universities is an important part of our National Innovation Strategy,” said Rock. “These investments… will help us achieve our goals of making Canada one of the world’s most innovative nations.”

Rock added that the funding will help Canada compete in today’s knowledge-based economy and attract researchers.

“These researchers will help attract top quality students to Calgary,” said McLellan. “Their research activities will continue to bolster the development of new knowledge economy clusters in our region.”

It is unclear which U of C programs will share in the new funding.
