Lighthearted thoughts on fighting tuition

By Kris Kotarski

My fellow citizens, events at the University of Calgary have now reached the final days of decision. For more than a decade, students and other interested parties have pursued patient and honourable efforts to disarm the Albertan Progressive Conservative regime with tent cities and Tuition Fear Factor. We have gotten nowhere. Instead, we have had a deliberate ten-year period of shafting students since 1993.

Since then, the world has engaged in ten years of diplomacy. We have passed more than a dozen resolutions and we have sent hundreds of students to oversee the disarmament of the Klein Government. Our good faith has not been returned.

The Albertan regime has used diplomacy as a ploy to gain time and advantage–the Alberta Advantage. This must end.

Over the years, students have been threatened by Albertan officials, electronically bugged, and systematically deceived. Peaceful efforts to disarm the Albertan regime have failed again and again–because we are not dealing with peaceful men.

This regime has increased tuition for ten straight years, against Alberta’s students and against Alberta’s people. In recent days, our student leaders have been doing their part. They have delivered public and private messages urging the dictator to leave Alberta, so that disarmament can proceed peacefully.

He has thus far refused.

All the decades of deceit and cruelty have now reached an end. Ralph Klein and his sons must leave Alberta within 48 hours. Their refusal to do so will result in random acts of stupidity, commenced at a time of our choosing. For their own safety, all foreign nationals–including journalists and inspectors–should leave the campus immediately.

To the Albertan people: if we must begin blocking traffic on Crowchild Trail, it will be directed against the lawless men who rule the country and not against you. As our coalition takes away their power, we will deliver the debt-free professionals this province deserves. We will tear down the apparatus of terror and we will help you to build a new Alberta that is prosperous and free. In a free Alberta, there will be no more wars of aggression against your neighbours, no more poison factories, no more executions of dissidents, no more torture chambers and rape rooms. The tyrant will soon be gone. The day of your liberation is near.

That is the future we choose. As free students, we have a duty to defend our education by uniting against the violent. And today, as we have done before, the students and our allies accept that responsibility.

Good night, and may God continue to bless this campus.
