The General Faculties Council is expected to approve 12 new undergraduate academic awards, and 14 new graduate awards at their Thu., May 15 meeting. Values for the undergraduate scholarships range from $200 to a full year’s tuition, while graduate scholarships range in value from $300 to $6,000.
Proposed new scholarships for which undergraduates must apply include: the Calgary Italian Sportsmen’s Bursaries offered to two undergraduates studying Italian worth $2,500 each; the Carla Korponay Memorial Bursary in Accounting worth $1,800; the Jeno Korponay Memorial Bursary in Engineering worth $1,800; and the West Canadian Bursary in Engineering offered to a civil engineering student worth $500.
Undergraduate scholarships to be awarded by departments or programs include those for students studying International Relations, Urban Studies, Computer Science, Software Engineering, painting, and architecture.
Proposed scholarships for which graduate students must apply include the CPANS Air and Waste Management Prize and the Mildred Shaw Book Prize. Other new graduate scholarships awarded by departments or programs include those in the areas of management, English, tourism, snow science, Greek and Roman studies, economics, and kinesiology. One-hundred ten new entrance and continuing MBA scholarships worth $2,000 to $5,000 per year have also been proposed.
The Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, worth $6,000 to each of 75 new PhD students, will also be considered by GFC.
Students wishing to apply for scholarships must do so at the Student Awards Office by June 15.
