Swimming swell

Not all swim competitions are meant to be won.

Last weekend’s College’s Cup at the University of British Columbia was a training meet for the University of Calgary swim team, who swam without the "fastskin" race suits worn by other teams, and placed third and fifth overall, women and men respectively.

"We wanted to see how we could swim without fastskins so when we use them at nationals at the end of the month, we will go that much faster," explained team captain Cameron Hyder.

Overall, the team swam well. The men’s team now has four CIS national championship qualifiers, namely Hyder, Graham Diehl, Chad Murray and Johnathan Schjott. The women boast 10 qualifiers.

Along with first-place finishes by some members of the National Sports Centre in Calgary, U of C swimmer Carrie Burgoyne broke a meet record in the 400m Individual Medley with a time of 4:47.67.

Before short-course nationals, the U of C swimmers compete in a home dual meet Fri., from Nov. 7, 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the U of C pool. A dual meet between the prairie teams, it preceeds the high-profile Cascade Speed Meet this weekend.
