SPUN: Junior Boys

By Myke Atkinson

Never would anyone guess Hamilton, Ontario and its surrounding area to be the breeding ground of some of the world’s best electronic music. With Manitobans now secure in their spot as purveyors of psychedelic dance music, Domino went hunting for the next big thing from the burgeoning scene. Junior Boys (a duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus) was their catch, and their debut for the label has a sound sitting comfortably between New Order and the Pet Shop Boys. Combining retro synth samples, glitchy cut up beats and flat vocals in the school of Ian Curtis, Last Exit is hardly anything but new. However, when it’s done this well it doesn’t really matter. Tracks such as “Teach Me How To Fight” and the single “Birthday” remind listeners a good song is a good song, no matter what year it sounds like it came out.
