Students and members of the community gathered in the MacEwan Student Centre concert hall to address the loss of five young people who were killed at a Brentwood house party following Bermuda Shorts Day.
At the vigil, leaders from on and off campus shared their thoughts on a tragedy where details are still scarce.
“We are still coming to grips with this tragedy and what transpired this morning,” said University of Calgary president Elizabeth Cannon. “We don’t know all the details yet. We don’t know the full impact on the U of C community.”
Cannon said that students affected by the tragedy could defer their final exams. Decisions over deferrals will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Speaking to a full house, Students’ Union president Raphael Jacob encouraged students to seek help if they need it.
“I think it’s awkward to reach out to people. My advice from me to every single one of you is don’t be afraid to reach out and talk to someone,” Jacob said.
Students looking for someone to talk to can go to the Wellness Centre or Faith and Spirituality Centre.
