Last weekend the men’s basketball team was defeated by the Brandon University Bobcats in two exciting, but disappointing, games. The Dinos held a lead on more than one occasion over the weekend, but on both nights the boys ran out of steam, allowing the Bobcats to sink in their teeth.
“Our biggest problems in Friday’s game were a low shooting percentage and a high number of turnovers,” said Dinos Head Coach Dan VanHooren. “We out-shot Brandon 74-58, but by the end both [Chris Wright and Chris Harris] were fouled out.”
In the second half of Friday night’s contest the Dinos came back after trailing 74-57 to score 24 points in four minutes–taking the lead with only six minutes remaining. However, they were unable to continue this momentum losing 100-88.
Saturday’s game was much closer. The boys led the Bobcats into the second half 44-40 but they were again unable to finish losing 93-87. At one point the Dinos led by ten but the Bobcats scored eight points in the final minute of play.
Aman Heran dropped 26 points on Friday night, while Chris Wright netted 19 Friday and another 14 Saturday.
Leading the scoring on Saturday was John Riad, with 23 points, followed by Whit Hornsberger’s 18. Friday saw six Bobcats score in the double digits, and Brandon’s Nikosey Quick racked up 33 points in Saturday’s game, missing only five shots all night.
“Calgary is a good team and they battled back hard,” said the Bobcats’ Mustafa Cetin. “I think it was a good experience for us.”
VanHooren agreed: “This was a good start; these were process games.”
The Dinos play next weekend at the University of Alberta.
