This album, Ferrell’s first recording of new material in eight years, serves as an excellent showcase for her awe-inspiring voice. With a range of nearly seven octaves, she moves from throaty, soulful lows to incredible highs that are almost too high to hear.
Although she is known as a jazz singer, Ferrell also delves into funk and soul on this recording. Unfortunately, these forays into other genres are not up to the usual standard of her work, but are still well worth listening to.
Individuality still contains a solid dose of her more familiar jazz fare, and it is here that the disc truly shines: Ferrell’s gift for jazz is uplifting.
Fans of Rachelle Ferrell will not be disappointed with her new release, and anyone with an ear for jazz will certainly enjoy it too.
