A rare win

There was a lot of entertaining volleyball being played at the Jack Simpson Gym Feb. 2-3 as the University of Calgary Dinos battled for the last playoff spot.

The Dinos took on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in a two-game series over the weekend. Knowing their playoff chances were slim and thinning by the minute, the Dinos brought a lot of intensity and energy to the court Fri., Feb. 2.

The Dinos fell behind early to the third-ranked Wesmen, losing the first set before rebounding to win three straight with (21-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18). On a night where the whole team shined, the Dinos biggest players brought their A-games. Dino Scott Price continued his strong offensive performance with 23 kills in the match and Tyler Fraser also played large, picking up nine kills, 12 digs and three service aces.

“We played very well,” said head coach Rod Durrant about his squad. “When we put it all together and compete, we can be successful.”

“It’s a great win for us,” said Dino fifth-year left side Ryan Lenz. “We really needed this. We played as a team and everyone stepped up tonight.”

Saturday, the Wesmen rebounded to defeat the Dinos 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-14). The match started the same as Friday’s game with the Wesmen taking the first set and the Dinos winning the second, however the momentum quickly went back to the Wesmen with the pivotal third-set win.

“We played with them the first two sets, but the third set was a little frustrating,” said Price, a fourth-year outside hitter. “They played a lot better.”
