Sim City (1989)

Publication YearIssue Date

The quintessential city simulation game spawning simulations of all sorts (including dating, thanks to The Sims), Sim City started with humble DOS and Windows roots. With rudimentary 2-D graphics, square blocks as buildings and rudimentary roads and transit, it brought the world a first, albeit rudimentary, look into running a city.

Later versions such as Sim City 2000, Sim City 3000 and Sim City 4, introduced more complex 3-D graphics and richer game play. Besides the pain, it brought reality and fantasy together as well as the ever-popular exploding buildings upon demolition.

DOS and Windows roots? I had it on the C=64 in monochrome.
