Up two wins after their games Fri., Sept. 16 and Sun., Sept. 18; the Dinos men’s soccer team has proven their prowess over the other rookie-infested teams. Head Coach Andy Gibbs must be pleased.
The men traveled to the University of Alberta’s Foote Field on Friday to beat the Golden Bears on their own turf. The first and only goal of the game came in the 17th minute when U of C rookie Ryan “Don’t Call Me Dense” Holbrook capitalised on a corner, played badly by the Bears’ defense.
He nearly scored again later that half with a header that went just wide.
Keeper Richard Urbanczyk was solid for the U of C, shutting out the Bears. He stopped the U of A’s Alex Campos one-on-one to preserve the Dinos lead early in the game. The golden opportunity for the Golden Bears appeared when Mark Korthuis managed to get one past Urbanczyk during the 78th minute; but he was called offside. Cheaters never prosper, and the Dinos won their first game of the season.
At least the Bears managed to create some scoring opportunities. While the U of A was unable to finish, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies were unable to score. If the U of A was erectile dysfunction, the U of S would be flamboyantly missing their manhood.
Holbrook was the first to score in the 26th minute, and the Dinos led 1-0 going into the second half. Towards the end of the game, Adam “A-Mac” MacDonald struck a penalty kick into the bottom-right corner to extend the Dinos lead. U of C rookie Matt Reid was next to score with a header off a beautiful cross in the 81st minute. The final blow came from Craig “Yet To Be Nicknamed” Robertson–famous for scoring with his head–with a header off a free kick taken by MacDonald.
Perhaps the domination was not quite so supreme–the Huskies had 14 shots while the Dinos had 18. But the Huskies were particularly foul, with 14 fouls to the Dinos’ seven sins.
The Dinos have started off their year with a 2-0 fantasticon, putting them atop the Canada West standings. The men try to extend their reign of terror when they host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Sun., Sept. 25 at 2:15 p.m. on the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
