Wil

By Garth Paulson

In the liner notes of Wil’s latest album–and major label debut–the Calgarian boldly states “let it be known that this may not be the best album ever recorded in the history of music… it’s the second.” This statement is obviously tongue-in-cheek, but if Wil has the moxy to make it then he should be prepared to stand behind it.

What is the best album ever recorded in the history of music then? Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band? Highway 61 Revisited? London Calling? Pet Sounds? Exile on Main Street? Girl You Know It’s True? Sadly, Wil doesn’t provide us insight into what he considers to be the only album better than his Both Hands.

Maybe I’m just not informed enough in the ways of music, but I can think of at least a 100 records I consider better than Both Hands, and that’s only taking into account stuff I’ve actually heard–who knows how many best albums there might be in reality?

Still, Both Hands is a solid offering. The roots-rock sound is pleasing and the hint of rebellion, always threatening to spill over, is a welcome addition. Yet Both Hands never transcends beyond merely decent. As concrete as it is, it does not deserve mention alongside the greats.

Okay, fine. I’ll admit it’s better than Girl You Know It’s True.
