Woodland

Flophouse JR.

Publication YearIssue Date

Woodland is an apt name for this rock/country album. At first, the aural landscape is lush with banjo notes but then it becomes monotonous like an eternal trip through Kananaskis country.

The album starts out promising with "Field of Corn." It's a good piece of ear candy, with mysterious lyrics and strange banjo licks. In fact, the banjo figures prominently in the whole album. "Sorry Alibi" is a gloomy lament for an indifferent girlfriend but lead singer Jon Wood doesn't have the range or talent to make us believe his dark and dreary state.

The rest of the eight songs never shift into more uptempo beats. It's a slow drive through Flophouse Jr.-land indeed.
