Letter: Maclean's Wrong?PDF files may take a moment to load

I am used to Maclean's taking data out of context, so I was not surprised to see Tony Keller, managing editor of special projects at the magazine, take my quotes out of context as well in last week's Gauntlet. The comment regarding data being four years out of date refers, of course, to the survey of graduates published by Maclean's in the spring.

The Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy recently held a lecture on "energy, security and the long war of the 21st century." The speaker was James Woolsey, former director of the CIA under the Clinton administration. Not surprisingly, about two thirds of the lecture was about the devil terrorists, the devil Nazis, the devil communists and all kinds of other devils. However, the most striking part was the one about energy. According to this still influential person, the U.S.

I am wondering if the university has thought about Access Copyright alternatives, such as open access publishing. The best way to get out from under the thumb of this collective that is primarily controlled by old-economy academic publishers is to move the university to modern publishing models. As an example, MIT in the U.S.

I am a smoker and I am appalled that students are putting their butts out on the ground--most of the time right next to ashtrays, or sometimes as close as a few steps away. In addition to picking up butts, I have also picked up empty beer and liquor bottles from Parking Lot 12, and in front of MacEwan Student Centre.

In response to your supplement in support of students drinking and getting drunk, I challenge you and your staff to put together an even cooler supplement that is against alcohol and promotes alternative ways to have fun on and off of the U of C campus.

As you are certainly aware, alcohol and alcohol related incidents are rampant on campuses including binge drinking, failed classes, accidents and death. Alcohol has been considered by some researchers to be the number one problem that must be addressed on campuses.

Letter: U of C gets fountain-freePDF files may take a moment to load

An interesting article. Yes, Coca-Cola buys Calgary water and re-brands it as Dasani, but remember at the U of C we can only buy Aquafina due to the now long-forgotten Pepsi agreement. Of course the details of the Pepsi agreement are a closely guarded administration and Students' Union secret, but have you noticed that there are no water fountains in the university's two new buildings, ICT and CCIT? I wonder if there will be any water fountains in the digital library or the ISEEE building?

Editor, the Gauntlet

[Re: "Escalation not the answer," editorial, Aug. 3, 2006]

In his editorial "Escalation not the answer," Editor-in-Chief Chris Beauchamp starts off with a fallacy and goes downhill from there.
