Letter: Save the seals!PDF files may take a moment to load

Editor, the Gauntlet,

Every year on March 15, people all over the world stand up and ridicule Canada for our government-subsidized atrocity against the world's Western Atlantic baby seal populations. Currently, nothing makes me more ashamed to call myself Canadian.

[Editor's note: Seeing as you all are too content with the status quo to write letters, we've decided to show you kids how it's done with an excerpt from some insanity of days of yore. Evidently drug culture was still in full siwng in 1978]

Editor, the Gauntlet,

Living in Toronto in 1960, I enrolled in chemical engineering in the faculty of applied science, as it was called back then at U of T.

I am almost positive my tuition was $550. I am not sure if that included an activity fee or whether that was tacked on. It certainly did not include textbooks or anything extra required for labs. It was simple tuition and it was a lot of money back then.

[Re: "Demolition likely for MSC docks," Andrew Barbero, Feb. 15, 2007.]

After reading the latest news on the digital library developments, I am at a complete loss for words. When an estimated $50 million dollars needs to be spent in order to relocate loading docks, things have gone too far. It was a bit of an understatement when it was admitted that "in hindsight, having loading docks placed at the centre of campus was not the best way to set it up."

Editor, the Gauntlet,

This may seem completely random but I think the policy behind the effective writing requirement is a big steaming pile. Sure, you have to prove that you are proficient enough in English to be here, but come on! Why is it that marks from social studies 30/history IB do not qualify for it?

[Re: "X is for X-treme... for now," Jon Roe, Feb. 2, 2007.]

A sports writer writing about Canadian music. How interesting.

I would like Mr. Roe to explain to all of us how it is the CRTC's fault that some radio stations only play the Tragically Hip's '90s songs, and why those geniuses at those radio stations can't play different songs from a Nickelback album? The CRTC is not forcing anyone to play the same Nickelback songs over and over again.

Editor, the Gauntlet,

[re: "Stick this in your pipe and smoke it," Asia Walker, Jan. 25, 2007]

I find myself, yet again, disappointed by the narrow-minded views taken by the Gauntlet and its writers. To say that masochists--all masochists--enjoy second hand smoke is an ignorant blanketing of an entire community of diverse individuals.
