The Dinos men's hockey team finally has their mojo. And with playoffs approaching, they couldn't afford to make any mistakes. After struggling against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns throughout the season, the Dinos went into the enemy's lair Feb. 3-4 and bagged all four possible points--but not without some close calls.

After a slow start to 2006--losing four games in a row, including a game where they gave up five short-handed goals--the Dinos men's hockey team desperately needed a win. Fortunately, thanks to "monster performances," as TSN's Pierre McGuire would put it, by Alex Lalonde and Brett O'Malley, the team finally found the win column Jan. 27-28 hosting the University of Manitoba Bisons at Father David Bauer Arena.

How can a hockey team with a 4-0 advantage manage to blow the lead as if they had fallen asleep? Better yet, how does a team allow five short-handed goals in a single game--three in all of 35 seconds--to basically hand the game to their opponent?

Just ask the Dinos; they encountered this scenario against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Fri., Jan. 13.

After a fairly successful tournament Jan. 6-8--with at least a point in all but one game--the Dinos looked prepared for their first league games of the new year.

Friday, Jan. 13 was a fast-paced game played at Grant MacEwan College on smaller ice than our ladies are accustomed to. Although they fought a solid game, the Dinos couldn't buy a goal.

If you're a hockey fanatic, you probably planted your ass on your couch all Christmas break for the World Junior Hockey Championships. It was eventful; Canada won a second straight gold medal despite being underdogs and die-hard fans were left wondering how, in Division III, the Armenian goalie managed to make 83 saves on 133 shots for a 50-0 loss against Iceland. Although Iceland had a goalie in net, they would've won the game without him as Armenia only got 10 shots on goal.

The Dinos women's hockey team had a chance to finish the semester off strong Dec. 1-2. They had two shots at dethroning the Red Deer College Queens.

With the home ice advantage, the Queens were able to steal a win from the Dinos on Thursday. The hard fought game ended in a 4-2 Dinos loss. On the upside, with a total of 13 goals in 12 games, it was exciting to see some scoring from the team.

The Dinos men's hockey team hasn't won a pair of weekend games since their opening series at the beginning of October.

The Dinos travelled to the University of British Columbia to face the Thunderbirds Dec. 2-3. After barely sneaking a 5-4 victory on Friday, the Dinos once again failed to make it two wins in a row on Saturday.

The Dinos men's hockey team took on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in a home-and-home series Nov. 25-26. The 'horns have not been ranked in the top 10 this season while the Dinos just slipped out of the rankings the previous week. Despite having a better season thus far, the Dinos recorded a loss and a tie against the 'horns last time the teams met Oct. 14-15.

After a weekend off from competition, our Dinos women's hockey team felt well rested and prepared for a weekend fight against their Calgary rivals, the Mount Royal College Cougars, Nov. 18-19.

However, much like previous games this season, the Dinos were unable to put forth their best effort in their first of two games, convincingly losing 4-0. Some positives did come out of this game however. The Dinos broke out of their own end consistently and successfully, something we have not seen much of so far this season.
