Re: "All Dead Babies go to Heaven" and "Depressing Boy," Feb. 26, 2004,

Although it is my first year at U of C, I have attended two other universities and wrote for the campus paper at one of them, so I do have an appreciation for campus media.

However, my appreciation for the Gauntlet is drying up fast.

The University of Calgary Dinos competed in the 2004 Canada West Track and Field Championships Feb. 27-28 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The women's team ran and jumped their way to a second place finish while the men's squad placed a respectable fifth of seven contending teams.

Although the women's team placed second, it was second to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies who dominated the rest of the squads. This was their eighth consecutive Canada West championship.

Earlier this year, new Residence Director Jim Dunsdon teamed up with the Residence Students' Association to create a new re-admission process for returning residence students. The old system, which was based on points gained by volunteering and participating in the community, has been replaced by a lottery.

In a conversation over lunch with a close friend of mine, the topics of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide and American intervention came up. We had differing viewpoints.

"It's nice to see the world community finally stepping up and doing something," he said, or something to that effect, adding military intervention for humanitarian reasons was a refreshing development.

I was more skeptical.

On yet another intercontinental tour, Southern California's Mad Caddies are at it again. Coming back to Calgary to an eagerly awaiting fan base, the Mad Caddies combination of punk and ska is sure to please anyone.

"It's been like two months of just sitting and relaxing and we're ready to head back out on the road again," says guitarist/banjo player Sascha Lazor. "This tour will take us across Canada, the U.S., over to Europe and we'll probably even end up in Australia."

While speaking to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce on Mon., Feb. 23, University of Calgary President Dr. Harvey Weingarten unveiled the Urban Centre Initiative. It will create a downtown campus for the university and the community.

The goal is to establish better relationships with the community by being at the heart of the city. Many faculties such as, the Haskayne School of Business, and the Faculties of Medicine, Social Work, and Fine Arts will have operations downtown.
