Thieves and Gorby show up at U of CPDF files may take a moment to load

Thefts are on the rise, according to Campus Security manager Lanny Fritz. There were 19 reports of theft in September resulting in over $34,000 in losses.

"Traditionally, theft would be at one of its higher points [right now]," said Fritz. "Because we've got a campus full of people, most of our thefts are stolen backpacks with textbooks and calculators, laptops and those kinds of things."

Students who leave their valuables unattended are most at risk.

Minister of Foreign Affairs John Manley spoke at the University of Calgary's Rozsa Centre Tues., Oct. 31, outlining the direction in which he plans to export the Canadian economy. Manley traced his background as Minister of Industry and how he plans to continue to highlight economic and trade issues in foreign policy.

"The most important thing for me is that the Foreign Affairs portfolio continues to be an economic portfolio," he said. "The question to answer is, what is Canada doing to prepare for the new economy?"

Aimee Wright is a woman with a mission. As Safewalk Coordinator for the University of Calgary she has made it her mandate to raise awareness of campus safety by promoting the use of the program. Last year there was a significant drop in the number of people who used safewalk during the winter months and this is of great concern to Wright and her fellow Safewalk volunteers.

If you are one of the 30 per cent of Canadian citizens who suffer from the condition known as myopia or, more commonly nearsightedness, you have probably wondered about the cause of your condition. Have you also wondered if a permanent, non-surgical cure will arise in the near future? If so, perhaps the recent genetic discovery by University of Calgary researcher Torben Bech-Hansen will put your mind at ease.

Poor Valentina Tereshkova. Despite being the first woman in space, she remains even more obscure than Laika, the first canine to orbit the Earth. Vostok 6 deftly combines folk music with '70s synth-pop in order to tell her extraordinary tale. The dark overtones of Pink Floyd's Meddle and David Bowie's Low resonate and the chill of the Cold War is given an extra boost from Kurt Swinghammer's rich voice. But there are humorous moments. The title-track, the Beach Boys' "I Get Around" as sung by robots, is straight out of a '50s B-movie.

If you enjoy the electronica scene and you don't know about Junior Vasquez, then you should. He has been around since time began and is gracing Twilo's first CD release.

The first of two CD's is an amazing cross-genre mix of just about everything. The album starts with Samba/Italian house beats and moves with great accuracy into house, hard house and trance, ending with some tribal and old dub sounds you might recognize from days gone past.

If a Beverly Hills 90210 episode were set at the Calgary Stampede (maybe Luke insists on plugging the DVD release of his seminal 8 Seconds) and they go to a bar for the inevitable romantic conflict montage, John Ford would be the band playing. Basically, it's radio-friendly, alt. country music played by a band whose legs are long enough to walk both sides of that fence.
